ENVIRONMENTAL SAFETY & HEALTH FIELD PROFESSIONAL
Value Added Solutions (VAS) is searching for multiple Environmental Safety & Health (ES&H) Field Professionals to support our client the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory’s (PPPL) ES&H Department. VAS is searching for five professionals with specific capabilities and expertise in construction and industrial field safety support.
Personnel will assist the PPPL ES&H Safety team(s) in inspecting and overseeing industrial and/or construction work by both PPPL internal work teams and external subcontractors, ensuring conformance with the Lab’s safety, environmental and security programs.
Supporting ES&H in implementing the Department of Energy (DOE) Integrated Safety Management (ISM) Principles and Core Functions. Specific duties may include but are not limited to:
a. Observing work in the field for changed or changing conditions and verify effective application of controls using pause or stop work when needed.
b. Conducting the field verification and inspection of PPPL approved or accepted Job Hazard Analysis (JHAs) and review project procedures for identification of hazards and appropriate controls.
c. Participating in general safety and pre-shift work area walk-throughs to verify conditions are safe to proceed.
d. Assisting activity staff with pre-job/shift meetings to support supervisors properly brief workers as to job hazards and required controls.
e. Assisting in brainstorming effective, in-field safe-work solutions to construction and/or industrial hazards and safety challenges with ES&H staff.
f. Proactively identifying and communicating problems at their incipient stage and assisting activity teams with their prompt and effective resolution.
g. Reviewing field activities for the potential introduction of new hazards and safety challenges and communicate them to the ES&H safety team.
h. Assisting project team and PPPL ES&H organization in reporting safety concerns to ES&H Management.
i. Perform daily safety inspections of work site activities within the facility.
These professionals will provide ES&H services on 10-hour shifts, with infrequent but periodic support during the weekends as mission needs arise. All work is expected to be done on-location at James Forrestal Campus, 300 Forrestal Rd, Princeton, NJ 08544.
Personnel will be provided with properly sized minimum required personal protective equipment (PPE) for employees working at PPPL. Minimum required PPE for access to most work areas at PPPL include ASTM F2412/2413 safety shoes, ANSI Z87 safety glasses, ANSI Z89.1 safety helmet (unvented with chin straps), high-visibility vest or other high-viz clothing. Additional PPE, such as hearing or respiratory protection, may be required depending on work activities and hazards.
Minimum Qualifications:
1. High School diploma with ten (10) years or more direct experience serving as a safety professional in the construction, power or other heavy industries, OR an Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or equivalent in a related field of study with 8 years or more direct experience in a safety related role, OR a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or equivalent in a related field of study with 5 years or more direct experience in a safety related role.
2. Strong understanding of and experience with OSHA 1910 and 1926 requirements.
3. Recent experience working with multi-trade workforces such as steelworkers, carpenters, mechanical technicians/laborers, electricians, plumbers, riggers, etc. in ground-up construction and/or experience in demolition.
4. In-depth experience with core physical and chemical hazards associated with construction and/or industrial facilities, such as excavation, confined space, hazardous energy control, elevated work, rigging and material handling, noise, and respiratory hazards.
5. Experience providing safety oversight in adherence with company policy, state and federal regulation, and recognized industry standards.
6. Experience with developing and/or reviewing Job Hazard Analyses (aka, Activity Hazard Analysis, Job Safety Analysis) within active construction, industrial, or demolition environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Experience with DOE’s Worker Safety & Health regulations (10 CFR 851), 29 CFR 1910, Safety and Health Regulations for General Industry, 29 CFR 1926, Safety and Health Regulations for Construction, PPPL ESH Directives 5008, 2016 DOE Standard 1066, Fire Protection, and DOE Order 420.1C, Facility Safety.
2. OSHA 10 or 30-hr. Construction or General Industry training
3. Professional certifications (CHMM, CSP, CIH etc.)
4. Experience with facility or company specific work permitting systems (Authorizations to Work Permits, Confined Space Permits, Hot Work Permits, etc.)
5. Experience working at PPPL or another Department of Energy Laboratory or Site in a similarly situated environment.
